North West Tri Club Compete at National Championships
The 25th Kilkee, Hell of the West Triathlon was held on Saturday last, 27th June. The race was designated as the National Standard Distance Championships. Limerick Triathlon Club had put in every effort into the race organisation and it showed on the day, with a great display of how to host a National Championships. Of the few elements that were beyond control the most important, the weather, decided that glorious sun shine was the order of the day, and for the first time in a number of years the wind and waves of Kilkee Bay did not present themselves. With over 600 entrants all chasing a national title competition was tough and with a race course dubbed “Hell of the West” it wasn’t going to be an easy race.

Quigley is Ulster Triathlon Chapionship (16/05/09)
The Ulster Sprint Triathlon Championships were held in Limavady at the weekend and saw a great turnout from the North West Triathlon Club. With a change to the bike course and some unfavourable weather the athletes knew this course would prove more difficult than in previous years. However this didn’t stop Colm Quigley from winning the race and be crowned Ulster Triathlon Champion. Quigley race hard from the gun in what was a closely fought race. He blasted out the swim in 9 mins 45 secs. With Andrew Lee of Queen's Tri Club and Peter Savage (Newry Tri Club) chasing, Quigley put the hammer down on the bike and finished strong on the run to snatch the win with 4 seconds to spare coming in on 1hour 3mins 12secs.

Paddy and Big Doc’s Ironman Adventures (Part 3)
Ironman UK (07/09/08)
“An Exercise in Character Building!"
Account by Paddy Mclaughlin
After the severe heat and hills of Nice for Ironman France last year, I vowed that my next race over the distance would be in more “suitable” climates. I’d a fair idea that Ironman UK wouldn’t be hitting the mid to high 30’s, plus the early September date suited me, as I wouldn’t be able to get in much training at the start of the year with other commitments. I also convinced “Big Doc” Sean Doherty that 8 weeks is ample time to recover between Ironmen races (He’d done Ironman Germany in July) So, entered we did and off to the wind swept town of Sherbourne, South England we headed for a tough, but pleasant and enjoyable experience! Or so we thought!

Timberman Half-Ironman - August 2008
Account by Paddy McLaughlin
This race was voted as “the race you have to do before you die” in Triathele Magazine in the States. Held at Lake Winnipesaukee, in New Hampshire which is about an hour north out of Boston, I thought I’d combine a wee triathlon into an excuse to visit my relatives there, along with a build up race for Ironman UK.
It’s easy to see why this is voted as one of the best races! It’s made into a whole triathlon festival and attracts a large pro field with many of the “Big Names” turning up. The Friday before the race there was a Dinner with the Champions, where Andy Potts, Chrissie Wellington, Simon Lessing, Mick Lovato, Karen Smyers and Terenzo Bozzone all gave talks about being pro athletes, and gave out a few tips to the mere mortals!

Aileen Morrisson Diary - "BG World Cup, Lorient "
My 1st World Cup race and I’m off to Lorient, France with Davy, and my now 2 wheeled bike box. Opting for a flight to Paris, we drive around in circles for an hour deciding how to get out of Paris before we embark on a 5hr car journey to Lorient on the Wednesday night.
On the Thursday I checked out the bike and run course, both seemed to be manageable, and a large team of people were setting up the rather vast and impressive transition area. Just out of transition was a bit of a hill so I practiced this a few times at speed on both the Thursday and Friday. Mark Dempsey who happened to be in the area on his honeymoon with Ailbhe came to meet and help me. (Get a life Mark)...

Aileen Morisson Diary - "ITU European Cup Vienna "
So to my 6th and last European cup race. This was to be my toughest race as there were 42 on the start list, many of whom were seasoned tri-athletes. Having done tests in Sports Institute NI a week previous my iron levels came back low, and my run treadmill test was poor compared to what Chris had expected of me. This had played on my mind and I lacked confidence and motivation going into the race...

Aileen Morrison Diary - "ITU Turkey"

Before we make it to the airport Mark has already lost his sunglasses. But in his defence he had done some organising to get us there with the bikes in a 7seater.
During the 12 hour travel day poor Claire has to pay more at customs as she has a British passport, the control guys says ‘because she English she pay more’. As you can imagine Mark does not let her away with this and she is reminded a thousand times over the weekend. Friends back from turkey tell Claire its 50degress, and so we drink lots. It’s not as bad as they make out and when we get there a strong wind across the lake greets us- happy days (but it’s still 35 degrees).

Final Outing for NWTC at Carlingford Triathlon (30/08/08)
Last Saturday saw five members of the NWTC travel across to Carlingford, Co. Louth to compete in what would be their last triathlon of the season. Good weather conditions and a flat course made it a fast race for all competitors. Colm Quigley blasted home in a time of 2hrs 1min 18 secs. This placed the North West’s club captain in 5th place overall and was good enough to win the Male 35-39 age group. Eimear O’Brien was next to stop the clock on 2.10.13 and saw O’Brien continue her winning streak by taking top spot in the women’s race and also in the F25-29 age group.
