Carlingford
Triathlon
The poor weather conditions were not enough to put Paul Mc Connellogue
off Saturday, 11th August as he raced to a fantastic personal best
at the Carlingford Olympic distance, over 15 minutes quicker than
his first attempt at Castlwellan the previous week. Fourth out of
the water, Paul held a steady pace over the following bike and run
legs to finish in 2hrs 14 minutes exactly, which earned him a top
15 finish and 2nd in the 40-44 age category.

Ulster Triathlon
Championships, Castlewellan
The
Ulster Olympic distance triathlon championships were held in Castlewellan,
Co Down on Sat 4th Aug. As one of the more picturesque locations
on the triathlon circuit, it is also one of the more challenging
races. Meaning the 280 athletes racing didn’t much of a chance
to admire their surroundings. Consisting of a single loop of the
lake for the 1500m swim, and two laps of tough undulating cycling
totalling 40km, and finishing off will a challenging 10km forest
trail run.

Tri-Athlone
In just a few years, the Tri-Athlone has grown to be the biggest
triathlon in Ireland. Between the Elite race (draft legal race),
the sprint distance race, and the try-athlon, over 1200 athletes
entered this year’s event. Due to heavy rainfall during the
previous week the 750m swim was shortened to 600m, as athletes had
to swim upstream against a strong current.

Ironman France
4am
and the 3 alarm clocks I’d set go off together, closely followed
by a text message from Sean Doherty down the hall making sure that
I was awake. Not that I needed them, as I’d hardly slept all
night worrying about the rough seas we’d swum in yesterday,
and would have to swim in again in a few hours. Me and “Big
Doc” had planned to swim a lap of the swim course the previous
day after we had checked the bikes into transition. It took us about
3 attempts to actually get into the water, as each time we tried
to wade in a big breaker would dump us back on to the beach along
with the other swimmers who had the same idea as us! Once we got
past these breakers the swells were that big that sighting buoys
was impossible, so we gave up and just swam parallel to the beach
for awhile. There was a lot of hoping and praying that things would
settle down before tomorrow morning!

Carrick-On-Suir
Triathlon
Paul Mc Connellogue and Micky
Mc Bride made the long trip down to Tipperary for the Carrick-on-Suir
sprint distance triathlon. The advantages of a fast down river swim
were cancelled out by a “long” 5km run. Both managed
strong performances, with Paul finishing in 1:10:57, after posting
a 7:48 time for the 750m swim. Micky continued to improve his time
over the sprint distance with a season’s best time of 1:14:57.
Irish
Sprint Title for Morrison
On
the 16th of June, the normally tranquil headland of Mullaghmore
was turned into a buzzing triathlon hub as it staged the Irish Sprint
Distance Triathlon Championships. The 750m swim was held in the
choppy waters of Mullaghmore harbour, with the 20km bike section
held on the flat fast main road out to Grange, and back. The final
5km run leg was a single hilly lap of the headland to zap the last
of the energy out of those legs!

Crooked Lake
Triathlon
The challenging
course of the Crooked Lake Triathlon held in Camlough, Newry on
Sat 9th June, was made harder by the very high temperatures recorded
on the day. Not only did the 300 athletes have to face the hilly,
technical bike course, and the 2 big climbs on the run, but they
had to battle with 25+ degree temperatures.

Inishowen 100
Cycle
This year's Inishowen 100 cycle is on Sunday 19th August. Last year
we had more than 200 entrants with 100 of those entering on the
morning of the event. This caused a lot of hassle, ordering food,
printing certificates etc. at the last minute and we want to encourage
everyone to enter for the event in good time. For this reason the
standard entry fee of £20 will be increased to £25 after
the 10th August. So please.....(1) make a committment to take part
in this great event that is on our doorstep; (2) step up the training
miles in the coming weeks and months (the Saturday club runs will
include all of this route); (3) enter before the 10th August for
£20; (4) enjoy a great day's cycling on August 19th.

World
Duathlon Championships
The
Northwest Triathlon Club would like to congratulate Letterkenny
AC athlete Brian Thursby-Pelham on winning a Silver medal at the

and 2nd in the 35-40 section.
Well Done Brian!
Liam Ball Triathlon
The field at the recent Liam Ball Triathlon, on in its 22nd consecutive
year, was made up of 16 Northwest Tri Club members. Although the
result sheet may not have been as full this year, there were enough
big names taking part to ensure a quality race. As usual the 1.2
km swim took place in the Templemore Sports Complex, with the 32
km bike section of the race this year going out the Letterkenny
road due to road works on the usual Buncrana road. Four laps round
the playing pitches (thankfully dry this year!) made up the 8 km
run section of the race.

Ulster Sprint
Triathlon Championship
On a morning when most sane people looked out their window and decided
to go back to their beds and pull the duvet over their heads, 17
athletes from the Northwest Triathlon Club (NWTC) made the trip
up to Limavady for the Ulster Sprint Triathlon Championships. The
19th May trip was worthwhile though as 5 members took home medals,
and 3 Ulster titles. Facing a 750m pool swim, 20km bike and 5km
run, athletes also had to battle with heavy downpours, and a “sporting”
crosswind during the race.

Ironman
Lanzarote
Micky Kerr from Derry was flying the flag for NWTC when taking part
in Ironman Lanzarote for the third year in a row. Despite the wind
and heat associated with the race, Micky still managed to post a
fantastic time of 12 hours 37 minutes for the 2.4 mile swim, 112
mile bike and 26.2 mile run. With 1hr 14 for the swim, 6hrs 37 for
the bike and 4 hrs 34 for the run. This is over an hour and twenty
minutes quicker than his previous personal best for the distance.
